2.The Roman Colosseum (Rome)
Colosseum , also called Flavian Amphitheatre , giant amphitheatre built in Rome under the Flavian emperors . Construction of the Colosseum was begun sometime between 70 and 72 CE during the reign of Vespasian . It is located just east of the Palatine Hill , on the grounds of what was Nero ’s Golden House . The artificial lake that was the centrepiece of that palace complex was drained, and the Colosseum was sited there, a decision that was as much symbolic as it was practical. Vespasian, whose path to the throne had relatively humble beginnings, chose to replace the tyrannical emperor’s private lake with a public amphitheatre that could host tens of thousands of Romans. The Colosseum could hold up to 75.000 spectators . Each sector was reserved to a specific class of citizens, based on their importance.
